Email lists, server managed
Configuration basics
- Name. If the list name is "news", then you'd send email to the list by addressing it to news@...
- Short 1-line description.
- Long multi-paragraph description and information.
- Subscriptions require your approval?
- Allow anyone to submit subscription request? Tell all website visitors how to subscribe online?
- Welcome message in email sent to anyone who subscribes.
- Good-bye message in email sent to anyone who unsubscribes.
- Who can send email to the list? What do you want to tell anyone else who tries to send email to the list?
- Save all emails so they can be viewed on the web? Who is allowed to view those emails?
- What topics do you want listed from which subscribers can select which messages to receive?
- There are many other settings.
If you don't want to allow everyone on the list to post to the list without approval, don't depend on just the "from" address to approve posts to the list.
List information that should be in the header of all postings to a list include List-* RFC 2369 headers,
and a recipient (to list name), sender (from), and/or prefix (subject) that is common to all postings.
Subscribing advice
- Don't subscribe anyone without their permission.
- Notify anyone you add to an email list.
- When others subscribe, require they confirm by responding to an email.
- Keep the subscription list private.
